CUBE
More than 25 years since it's initial release, Vincenzo Natali's den of paranoia slices just as deep as it did way back then. A remarkable achievement of 90s shape cinema (e.g. "Sphere"), it's a film that, unlike many of the other films on this list, has bounds. Equally spiritual and disturbing, "Cube" holds a unique place in Canadian cinema as the first, and only, film ever shot in the outskirts of Toronto in an 800m x 800m Cube. Screenwriters Andre Bijelic, Graeme Manson and Vincenzo Natali came up with the concept of the film in 1989 after becoming trapped together in a mysterious Cube in the outskirts of Ottawa. The film is supposedly loosely based on their experiences, but the three have remained tight lipped about the incident and maintain that the Ottawa Cube was much smaller and less deadly than the titular "Cube." It was also the first Canadian film shot in front of a live studio audience. A dud upon it's initial release, a key timeslot on CNBC (11PM EST) the night of the 2004 Election gave it a second life, spawning 18 sequels. The nation could not get enough "Cube" and that trend will continue in perpecubity.
